Whole30 rules

Von Die ThatCleanChef-Küche · Aktualisiert 20. August 2026 · 13 Min. Lesezeit

Whole30PaleoMilchfreiGlutenfrei

The complete Whole30 rule set in plain language, including the four exceptions people miss (ghee, green beans, snow peas, and vinegar), the pancake rule that trips up nearly everyone, and the reintroduction phase that is the actual point of the thirty days. Written from the official program rules, with the cook's version of what each restriction means at the stove.

Die FAQ

Die Fragen, die Köche uns stellen.

What can you not eat on Whole30?
Added sugar of any kind including honey, maple syrup and artificial sweeteners; alcohol, including in cooking; all grains including rice, corn, oats and quinoa; all legumes including beans, lentils, peanuts and soy; all dairy except ghee and clarified butter; and the additives carrageenan, MSG and added sulfites. On top of that, the program bans recreating baked goods, chips, and desserts from compliant ingredients, and bans weighing yourself for the thirty days.
Are potatoes allowed on Whole30?
Yes. White potatoes were added to the allowed list in 2014 and they are one of the more useful things in a Whole30 kitchen, since grains are gone and you still need something starchy alongside a protein. Sweet potatoes, all winter squash, plantains and parsnips are equally fine. Chips and fries bought from a shop are usually out on the oil and additives, but a tray of potatoes roasted at home in olive oil or ghee is compliant.
Is coffee allowed on Whole30?
Black coffee is allowed, and so is coffee with compliant coconut milk or almond milk that has no added sugar or carrageenan. What is not allowed: milk, cream, half and half, sweeteners of any kind, and most flavored creamers, which fail on both sugar and dairy. Compliant coconut-based creamers exist but read the label, several contain cane sugar. Tea follows the same logic.
What happens after the thirty days?
You run the reintroduction, which is the part that produces the actual information. Groups go back one at a time, typically dairy first, then gluten-containing grains, then non-gluten grains, then legumes, with two or three compliant days between each so you can read the response. Track sleep, digestion, skin, joints, mood and energy. Most people find one or two categories cause real problems and add the rest back without issue.
