High-ProteinMake-Ahead

A healthy breakfast is the one that keeps you full past 10am, and that almost always means protein and fiber, not cereal and a banana. This is the frame for building one, plus the chef-tested breakfasts on this site that clear 20g of protein before 9am. Start with the high-protein breakfast bowl, overnight oats built right, the egg-white frittata, or the make-ahead breakfast burrito. Part of the meal-types guide.

The FAQ

The questions cooks bring us.

What makes a breakfast actually healthy?
Protein and fiber, mostly. A breakfast that's nearly all refined carbohydrate (cereal, toast, pastry, juice) spikes blood sugar and leaves you hungry within a couple of hours. A breakfast built on 20-30g of protein plus some fiber, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, oats, with fruit or vegetables, keeps you full to lunch. That's the floor every recipe in this collection is built to.
What's the easiest high-protein breakfast?
Overnight oats built with Greek yogurt and a spoon of cottage cheese, or the greek yogurt power bowl, both clear 19-30g and take five to ten minutes. Egg bites and the egg-white frittata batch on Sunday and reheat all week. Front-loading protein at breakfast is the single highest-leverage change most people can make.
Are overnight oats actually healthy?
They can be, if you build them right. Plain oats and milk land around 8g of protein, which isn't enough to hold you. Our overnight oats use a half cup of rolled oats to two-thirds liquid plus Greek yogurt and a protein source to reach 19g, with the sugar kept honest. The recipe shows the ratio so they set properly instead of turning to glue.
How much protein should breakfast have?
Aim for 20-30g. That's the per-meal range that meaningfully blunts mid-morning hunger and starts the day's protein target (most active adults want 90-120g total). Below about 15g and most people are hungry within two hours. Every breakfast in this collection is built to clear 20g, and we label the exact number at the top of each recipe.
